When the music stops: Protecting your instrument with Lark Music

By Performance

74% of UK adults either play or have played an instrument, with over 1m people taking up an instrument during lockdown. Whether you’re a professional or you play as a hobby, a musical instrument is a special thing and it’s important to make sure you have the right level of protection in place should anything happen.

How to protect your instrument

It’s common for people to think their instrument is covered with home insurance, and whilst this is sometime correct, it depends on the value of your instrument, how you use it and the level of cover you’re looking for. Because of this, we always recommend a specialist instrument policy, which might sound expensive, however, our policies start from £38 for worldwide cover.

To help you we’ve created a mini-guide on whether you need a musical instrument policy:

  1. Check your household policy limits

Your household policy might have single article limits which means the highest limit for which you can insure your items. In this case you need to remember to specify your instrument(s) on your policy.

  1. Understand your excess charges

Household policies often have a standard excess, and this may differ depending on the type of claim i.e floor, theft, accidental damage. Most of our instrument policies do not have a claims excess* as the insurer covers the cost of making a claim.

  1. Beware of taking your instrument(s) out of your home

Although some items can be covered outside your home such as mobiles, activities with your instrument away from your home are usually not. Our policies can cover you when you go out with your instrument and we can even provide cover for travelling abroad*.

  1. Know how your instrument will be repaired or replaced

Regardless of the cost of your instrument, once you’ve started playing it we understand that you naturally become attached to it. By having a specialist instrument policy you will have your choice of repairer instead of sending it away to a complete stranger or being offered a direct replacement.
